A well known breast cancer charity is asking Bristolians to ‘Walk the Walk’ by signing up to The SunWalk Bristol, a charity Power Walking challenge which sees thousands of women, men and children take to the streets of Bristol each July.
Organised by breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, The SunWalk Bristol is celebrating its fifth birthday this year and will aptly take place on Sunday 5th July at Ashton Court. Last year thousands of women and men Power Walked in spectacularly decorated bras – a trademark of the charity – to raise nearly £1/4 million for vital breast cancer causes.
But it’s not just adults that can sign up for the challenge; The SunWalk Bristol is all about a fun day for the whole family, including children. Last year’s event saw many young walkers take part and the youngest ‘walker’ was just 3 months old!
Walk the Walk, the grant making health charity behind The SunWalks and the famous midnight MoonWalks in London and Edinburgh, is offering places on The SunWalk Bristol to families and friends across the UK who want to embrace a healthy challenge for 2009. Designed to be a fun day out for all the family, there are a variety of distances to choose from: 5km, 10km or even a half marathon for those looking for more of a challenge.
Over the past five years, Walk the Walk has been responsible for funding substantial projects in the Bristol area including the new centre for Penny Brohn Cancer Care and the Bristol Oncology Centre. It is hoped that this year’s SunWalk will raise £500,000 for breast cancer causes and research projects that will benefit people across the UK; to date the charity has raised in excess of £47 million.
The money raised will also contribute to Walk the Walk’s scalp cooler programme. Scalp coolers are special machines which can help cancer sufferers keep their hair during chemotherapy. Walk the Walk aims to ensure that there are enough throughout the UK to provide all cancer patients with equal access to this treatment.
Nina Barough, founder of Walk the Walk, said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating the fifth birthday of The SunWalk Bristol. The first SunWalk in 2005 had just 500 walkers, but over the years thanks to the fantastic support from the people of Bristol the event has gone from strength to strength. Almost 2,500 walkers took part in last year’s challenge and raised almost £1/4 million for Walk the Walk but we want to raise even more money this year. So, even if you have never taken part in anything like this before, please do take this opportunity to sign up to the challenge and help make a difference. You can help raise money and awareness for vital breast cancer causes, get fit, and have fun at the same time!”
