Walk to the beat with The Sunwalk Newcastle 2010

Walk the Walk, the UK’s leading grant making breast cancer charity is proud to announce the date of The SunWalk Newcastle 2010. Set to take place on Sunday 18 July, the day will not only be filled with thousands of walkers taking on the challenge of a 5k, 10k or Half Marathon distance, but also the sounds of one of the UK’s best tribute bands: The Bootleg Beatles.

The famous Beatles impersonators will set the theme for this year’s challenge: The Summer of Love and the return of Flower Power. Charity organisers Walk the Walk are asking women, men and children from Newcastle and beyond to get into the groove, and pay their own personal tribute to those affected by breast cancer by signing up to the challenge.

This will be the second time Walk the Walk has brought its charity Power Walking challenge to the city, following the hugely successful inaugural event last year. And on 18 July 2010, Newcastle’s streets will again drum to the beat of the footsteps of thousands, as they Power Walk around the city, past many of its most well-known landmarks including Newcastle City Football Club, the Tyne Bridge, Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Baltic Centre

All those over 13 - including the men – will be wearing spectacularly decorated bras, a trademark of the charity. So everybody can really let their imaginations run wild and take inspiration from the theme and their favourite pop stars when decorating their bras, from the hippies and Flower Power pop groups of the 60’s to the Supremes and other Motown bands.

But it’s not just over 13’s that can take part. This is a challenge that is open to all, no matter their age or fitness levels, as Walk the Walk is passionate about encouraging women, men and children to become fitter and healthier and take control of their own wellbeing. With 5km and 10km distances (minimum age 6) on offer for children under 13, and a Half Marathon distance for those aged 13 and over, The SunWalk Newcastle is a fun day out for the whole family.

Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of the charity comments:

“Walk the Walk is not just about walking, it’s about life, and we want to raise as much money as possible in 2010 to help really make a difference to the lives of those affected by breast cancer in the North East and throughout the country. Newcastle really is one of the friendliest cities in the UK and with lots of famous pop stars – old and new - from the city, also has a fantastic musical heritage. We hope that the people of Newcastle will be up for the challenge again in 2010 and help The 2010 SunWalk to be even bigger and better. So, even if you have never taken part in anything like this before, take this opportunity to sign up to the challenge and help make a difference. You can raise money and awareness for vital breast cancer causes, get fit, have fun, and even sing your socks off if you want, all at the same time!”

The wonderful atmosphere and enthusiasm of over 1,200 walkers at The SunWalk Newcastle 2009 succeeded in raising an amazing £113,000 for vital breast cancer causes in just one day. Walk the Walk hopes that The SunWalk Newcastle 2010 will raise in excess of £250,000 for breast cancer causes that will benefit people across the UK, and help towards improving the quality of life and treatments for cancer patients in the city.
