THE SUNWALK NEWCASTLE IS BACK

Breast cancer charity Walk the Walk is delighted to announce that The SunWalk Newcastle, a new Power Walking charity challenge for the North East will be returning to Exhibition Park on Sunday 19th July. Last year’s event was cancelled due to adverse weather, but the SunWalk is back following unprecedented demand to spread some family fun and raise much needed funds for vital breast cancer causes.

The SunWalk Newcastle is the newest addition to Walk the Walk’s annual calendar of Power Walking challenges and will take place at Exhibition Park. It follows in the footsteps of its sister event in Bristol which last year saw thousands of women and men Power Walk in spectacularly decorated bras – a trademark of the charity – to raise nearly £1/4 million for vital breast cancer causes in the North-East and across the UK.

But it’s not just adults that can sign up for the challenge; The SunWalk Newcastle is all about a fun day for the whole family, including children. The SunWalk Bristol saw many young walkers take part and the youngest ‘walker’ was just 3 months old!

Walk the Walk, the grant making health charity behind The SunWalks and the famous midnight MoonWalks in London and Edinburgh, is offering places on The SunWalk Newcastle to families and friends across the UK who want to embrace a healthy challenge for 2009. Designed to be a fun day out for all the family, there are a variety of distances to choose from: 5km, 10km or even a half marathon for those looking for more of a challenge.  It is hoped that this year’s event will raise £300,000 for breast cancer causes and research projects that will benefit people across the UK.

Nina Barough CBE, founder and chief executive of Walk the Walk, said: “We were all very disappointed to have to cancel the event last year but for the health and safety of all it was the right decision.  But we are back and looking forward to it more than ever!

“The response we received from the local community last year was just amazing, and even though the SunWalk did not take place we managed to raise £22,000. Every walker from last year’s challenge is automatically entered to walk this year so we already have more than 1,000 signed up for the challenge. We’re determined to show the weather it can’t beat us!

“Even if you have never done anything like this before, please do take the opportunity to sign up to the challenge and help make a difference. Although we can’t control the weather, we promise this year’s SunWalk Newcastle will spread a little sunshine to all!”

Over the past few years Walk the Walk has been responsible for funding several major projects such as The Generation Study and Penny Brohn Cancer Care as well as their own special project the Scalp Cooling Programme. Scalp Coolers are machines which can help cancer sufferers keep their hair whilst having chemotherapy. Walk the Walk aims to ensure there are enough scalp coolers throughout the UK to provide all cancer patients with equal access to this treatment and  have now granted 130 to 35 hospitals, including Durham University Hospital.
