Walk the Walk is a grant making charity dedicated to raising vital funds for breast cancer research and cancer care but is also passionate about encouraging women and men to become fitter and healthier and take control of their own wellbeing. Our flagship event is The Playtex MoonWalk but Walk the Walk also takes teams of women and men to challenges all over the UK and across the world to raise money and awareness.
This is an adventure of a life time and one not to be missed! During the trip you will visit rock pools, waterfalls, relaxing spa’s and embark on a whale watching trip AND power walk the Lake Myvatn Marathon. The 26.2 mile course follows Lake Myvatn through breathtaking scenery with spectacular sights of local wildlife and clean, crisp unpolluted air.
Power walking is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK; it is low impact and accessible for all ages, sizes and levels of fitness. An average walk is approximately 3 miles an hour – by power walking you are aiming to increase your speed to 4-4.5 miles an hour. By using a simple technique you will raise your heart rate and get the blood pumping, thereby improving your fitness! When you start power walking you will find after only a couple of sessions that you feel a difference and researchers have described it as ‘the perfect form of exercise.’ For more information on technique see our 'Get Walking ' page and the training guide is packed full of information!”
Myvatn lies in the northeast of Iceland on the western edge of the volcanic active zone that runs across the country from southwest to northeast. Mývatn is 37 square kilometers in area and 278 m above sea level. The lake is shallow with about 50 small islands.
Walk the Walk ask everybody to commit to raising a minimum of £500 as we feel this is a figure that most people can reach, in fact many are surprised at just how much they can raise. What is so special is that every single person is raising money for Walk the Walk which is then granted to our selected benefiting charities. With so many people focusing on this vital cause we are able to make a very big difference to the work being carried out.
We ask everybody that enters the Lake Myvatn Marathon to commit to a training plan. The Lake Myvatn Marathon is a challenge and it is important to prepare your body for it. We provide you with a training guide in your welcome pack to get you on your way and you will find that after pounding those streets just a couple of times you will start to feel a difference and your pace will begin to increase. Even if you exercise regularly you will find that power walking uses different muscles so it is important to train – nothing replaces walking! We aim to walk as a team so you will need to aim for a walking pace of 15 minute miles.
We will stay in the Hotel Reynihlid. This is rated a 4 star hotel and is the leading hotel in the Lake Myvatn region. The hotel has 41 comfortable rooms and is located in the heart of the area. The hotel restaurant is fully licensed and has a professional and personal service. You will find typical dishes for the area and an extensive á la carte menu.
The climate can be characterized as a cool, temperate batch of weather, shaped by the nearby ocean. When traveling here, you should be prepared for anything, as the weather can sometime be quite unpredictable. The average temperature in June is 11˚C! Bring lots of thin layers, daytime temperatures can get quite warm, but it could get cool at night!
Walk the Walk has arranged for your transport to and from the marathon. We will arrange to meet in the hotel reception and take our coach to the start line. After the marathon we will all travel back to the hotel together. This is included in your entry fee.
