I couldn’t believe what a beautiful sunny day it was as I set off full of anticipation for Walk the Walk 2007 in Hyde Park.
We were only a small team but everyone was in such good spirit it didn’t matter and after getting to know each other a little, and warming up we headed off to the starting line together. I had no idea how many walkers and runners there would be and it was quite amazing to be in amongst that number of women all chatting and laughing together – it’s was a great feeling (albeit it rather frustrating getting to the start line!)
Just as we crossed the line everyone was cheering – especially the guys up on the roof of the army barracks who really got everyone smiling and waving and giggling - as women do!!!
I broke away from the team after about a minute as I was so determined to complete the race in my best time, but as I went round the first bend in the course I could hear them singing which spurred me on and I DID IT – I finished in my best time ever!!
The finish line appeared and I ran toward it as if being pulled by a magnetic force. The feeling of crossing the line, hearing the crowds cheer and getting my medal was just amazing. I will never know where that final burst of energy came from but it was most welcome.
