Daventry Mums

A local team of mums, all with children at Ashby Fields Primary School, Daventry will be taking part in the 13th Playtex MoonWalk, walking 26.2 miles through the night on 15th May 2010 starting at London’s Hyde Park in order to raise money for breast cancer causes.

The idea was born in the Ashby Fields Primary School playground one rainy afternoon, in September 2009, as a means to get fit and raise money for charity.  Since then the team has been training by tramping the streets of Daventry in rain, snow, ice and the occasional bit of sun.

Known as the ‘Ashby Angels’ the team consists of seven local mothers: Amanda Davies, Alison Faires, Karen Gilston, Sam Grisewood, Jen Hitchmough, Claire Hourigan and Mel Sharp.

As part of the team’s fundraising initiatives on Saturday 13th March, they took it in turns to walk 26.2 miles on a treadmill in the foyer of Tesco, Daventry and raised a staggering £254.25 in the process thanks to the generosity of local shoppers.

Team spokeswoman Jen Hitchmough said; ‘The £254 raised on the treadmill goes a long way towards the team’s target of £1,000.

‘We were blown away by the support of the Tesco staff and shoppers.  Everyone was really supportive of us and dug deep into their pockets to give as much as they could.  We understand how hard things can be for people at the moment so their generosity was even more appreciated.’ concluded Hitchmough.

"Our 9-strong walking team, have only on a few occasions managed to get together for some training but there are 2 regulars who walk Mondays and Thursdays from 7:30-9:15. We walk around Marlow and have been doing so since we registered in October. Now that the weather is improving we are organising weekend walks around the Chiltern’s countryside too.

The team is made up of 9 ladies from the Marlow & High Wycombe area. 7 of the 9 ladies work at the local secondary school as learning support assistants. This is my second walk the walk challenge, I completed the half-moon in 2007 with my mum, but for the rest of the team this is their first.

Based on the ‘Showtime’ theme for this year’s event we called ourselves team ‘Chi-BRA-go’ as in ‘Chicago’, and have designed our costumes accordingly: flappers, feathers, pearls and headbands!  Our local photographic studios ‘Venture studios’ were kind enough to donate an hour of studio time to the team and have produced some wonderful team photos."

Hi Steve,

I've had 3 girls contact me who all live fairly close to me. We are arranging to do training together and just act as some support when we think things are getting a bit tough...It just helps to have someone who will be doing what you are doing on the end of an email/phone to moan at! I've done charity marathon walks alone before and I know on the day you always end up chatting to people but the training is difficult when you are on your own and dont know if you are doing the right things. This is such a good support network! I'm really looking forward to meeting up with them all and hopefully walking together on the night!

Hi Steve

I am doing great and happy about my training so far!!.My body is aching all over as our walks are getting more and more intense.I was lucky indeed to have met two friendly and lovely ladies - veterans in walksWell experienced and they love to hit the terrain with vigour.I am doing the London Moonwalk and they are doing a double - London and Edinburgh!! They live in Farnborough and we have been  walking for the past three weeks.Yesterday (sat 26/3) we walked for 12 miles in 2hr 45mins.It was  a gruelling quick step walking. So we have done a total of about 45 hours - long walks on weekends and short walks during the mid-week for the past 3weeks.That is great.I am more of  a person who spends time in the gym to keep fit but i tell you outdoor exercises, by  far outstrips the gym as your body tries to battle and get even with the changing  harsh clamatic conditions and the enviromental factors.
But all in all its fun, Steve!!!!

regards

Just thought I'd let you know how I got on this Sunday, with my new walking pals, Carol and Jane.  I felt like I was going on a blind date! Not one of us knew what we look liked let alone, age, fitness levels or marital status, it would be different meeting a bloke as you would definitely tell him you looked a bit like Kate Moss through 2 beer glasses!  So I had a mixture of excitement and dread "What if we didn't get on?"!  But my fears were over within seconds - really lovely ladies.  Before long we all found out we had kids, roughly the same age group and one common goal - 26.2 miles!!

After a 4 mile brisk walk we headed for the tea room and had a good old chat about when we could meet next, how we were going to tackle the training plan, reassured each other that we would together achieve the MoonWalk and suddenly the challenge looked less of an up hill battle!

Also today I have received an email from 4 girls who work in a local hairdressing salon  .....

Hi Steve

I had one reply to my walking pals advert from a lady called Emma. We met for a drink in our local pub to chat and to get to know each other. At the weekend we did our first walk which was great. We are now going to be meeting and training together three times a week. A great result! We are now looking forward to the challenge in May!
